National Camping Month

It's National Camping Month! Time to explore the great outdoors!

Camping. That seemingly inevitable summer pastime for many folks that might evoke a wide range of emotions from a love of the great outdoors, of fond memories from making new friends and learning new skills at an extracurricular summer camp, or even just a longing to get away from the rat race for a while and reconnect with nature.

Whatever your calling, outdoor recreation appeals to people all over the US. The great outdoors has remained a favorite pastime for many people and is ever-increasing in popularity. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, an estimated 57.3% of all Americans aged 6 and older participated in outdoor recreation activities in 2023, with outdoor camping being the 4th most popular activity at 17.7%.

Camping isn't all just about sleeping in a tent outside, though. It can and often does include many other great outdoor recreational experiences such as hiking, fishing, cooking a delicious outdoor meal, and telling stories around a campfire. It's also a great introduction to nature, letting many people experience a different kind of life away from modern society, at least for a little while.

A more recent trend is 'glamping' or glamorous camping. This form of camping is especially popular with the younger crowd that involves staying in luxury campsites with modern amenities, such as running water, electricity, and Wi-Fi.

While camping and the great outdoors isn't as scary as sometimes depicted in media (like in camping horror/slasher films), there are certain things to be aware of and prepare for before heading out into the wilderness. The books and links in this display guide has information that will help you plan, prepare, and master the basics of camping and provide you the know-how to have a fun experience in the great outdoors!
