Computer Commons and How to Use

About the Computer Commons

The Library has 45 PC workstations as well as approximately 10 Macs in the Computer Commons, which is next to and in front of the Library's Reference Desk. There are three "quick print" stations meant for 10 to 15 minute use located directly in front of the Reference Desk; two of these stations are ADA priority and have desktop scanners.

All computers are free to use. PCs require AccessRio credentials but quick print stations and Macs are open to the public.

Anyone with AccessRio credentials may print from any computer. Printing is not available to the public. Library computers have a range of office and graphics software, including programs in the Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud suites. Computers are for academic use only.

How to login to a computer

The Library has a walk-up reservation system to use the PC computers. To use:

  • Walk up to any unused computer
  • Enter your AccessRio username and password on the screen
  • Hit “Enter” or click on the arrow
  • You now have the computer for a set amount of time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if all the computers are in use?

If all the computers are in use, see the librarian at the Reference Desk for assistance.

Laptop and Chromebook lending is also available depending on availability. Visit the Circulation Desk with your Student ID card/number. For more information visit Technology FAQs.

We also have wireless access to the web if you have your own laptop/tablet/or portable device that you wish to use. Simply pick the “Guest” login, then go to your browser and agree to the rules shown on our login page.

For other locations on campus that have computer access and printing facilities, check the Plugged in at Río (PDF) flyer.

What if I run out of time to complete my assignment?

The computer should notify you when your time is about to end. If you need additional time on the computer, ask for assistance from a librarian at the Reference Desk.

How do I log off a computer when I am finished using it?

Click on the yellow “Log Off” button in the upper right of the screen.

Please do not turn off the computer, lock it, or turn off the monitor. None of these actually ends your session.

Scanning in the Library

How much does scanning cost in the library?

  • All library visitors can scan free of charge!

What do I need to make scans?

  • No login is required to use any library scanner.
  • The library has 4 scanners:
    • 2 desktop scanners can be found in the Computer Commons in front of the Reference Desk. For assistance, ask a librarian at the Reference Desk.
    • 2 BookEye scanners are located in the Copy Center next to the Circulation Desk. These are standalone scanners ideal for scanning high-volume documents, books, newspapers, magazines, notebooks, and photos. See BookEye Scanner Instructions for Students.

Need help?

  • If in doubt about directions for the scanners, see a Circulation Desk Staff member or a Librarian at the Reference Desk for information and assistance.
