About the Zine Outreach Project
The RHC Library Zine Outreach Project, created by Librarian Claudia Rivas, was one of twenty-five proposals accepted for the inaugural cohort of the Radical Librarianship Institute at UCLA California Rare Book School (CalRBS). According to CalRBS, the goal of the institute is to support “library professionals to push for widespread systemic change that is centered on social and racial equality, collective action, community strengthening, and public participation.”
The project consisted of a two-day Zine Fest, followed by zine workshops that taught participants about zines and how to make them. Provided with access to free materials, participants had the opportunity to create zines and donate them to the RHC Library zine collection. Over eighty workshops were hosted from October 2023 to October 2024, with roughly 160 attendees.
The book (see link below) is a culmination of the project; it includes over one hundred unique zines made by approximately seventy-five RHC students, staff, faculty, and community members.
